Nighthold Strikes Back!

So, Mythic Nighthold (as well as the first wing of LFR) launched yesterday, and all of the top guilds are now in a race to get the world first kill of Gul'dan. As cool a feeling as it would be to get world first on something, the hours these guys put in is rather ridiculous and not really up my alley. I prefer to play the game at a much slower pace and take the content as it comes, not race towards the finish line.

Wait, what do you mean we're starting with Mythic tonight? We only done half of Heroic! Yes, our 2 night, 6 hour a week guild is going for that world first! Well, not exactly. Imagine my shock when about half an hour before the raid begins, the GM announces that we're going to be trying Skorpyron on Mythic. I was skeptical about starting last week on Heroic! He says that apparently people have been one-shotting old Skorpy on Mythic and that he reckons we could do it. He's a pretty good GM/RL, so I was somewhat convinced that he could lead us to victory. How did it go? Well...

Skorpyron

Man, this fight was a joke. I can't believe that this is even in a Mythic raid. Easy one-shot. Ok, that's what I would've liked to say, but no. This was definitely a Mythic fight. And with us only halfway through Heroic EN, we were way undergeared for it. This is the best run-down of the mechanics that I can do, and yes, they absolutely have to be followed:

  • Pop hero and DPS boss.

  • The beam thing he fires has a lot quicker cast time and must be avoided. It's not a death if you get hit, but if it coincides with Shockwave and you get knocked back, it's a wipe.

  • Red shards now come off of the boss. If you're behind one, you need to move out as soon as Shockwave goes off, since the shard will explode and likely kill you.

  • Adds spawn at intervals. Try to let them get to the boss before AoEing them down.

  • Often, the beam and shockwave casts will be very close together, so positioning is important to make sure you can get behind a shard in time. Every 2nd shockwave or so.

  • Green phase thing happens, which means there's usually only one shard to shield from a shockwave and EVERYONE needs to get behind it. This shard seems to give you poison damage of some sort.

That's pretty much it from what I can recall. It doesn't look too difficult, but positioning is extremely important and one person can wipe the raid under fairly common circumstances. Sadly, we didn't down the boss. We did 15 attempts and our last one was actually very close; we got him to 18%. At this point, we decided to call it and move back to Heroic. Could we have gotten him down? I think so. It was just over an hour worth of attempts and if we had of kept going for the rest of the night, he would've gone down. Would it have been worth it though? Not really. Not at this stage. It's too much time for too little reward and we'd be better off getting Tier or gearing up through Heroic. I mentioned that we were undergeared for it and this is certainly reflected in the logs, with the colours green and grey being a common theme. I'm sure we'll revisit it once we get Heroic down, but for now, it looks like we're out of the race. Oh well.

Back to Heroic

So crawling back to Heroic, we resumed our push through and caught up to exactly the same point we were at last week. I'd gotten Darckli's Dragonfire Diadem on Friday, so was eager to try it out in here. I've never been a hot shot when it comes to AoE stuff (and my logs reflect that), but this made things a fair bit more fun. The range on it is absolutely ridiculous, but the animation for Dragon's Breath isn't updated, so you've got no idea what you're actually going to it. In a few Mythic+ dungeon runs, the MT got a little testy because I'd accidentally pulled a pack or two. I'm still getting used to using it, but it's rather good for a fair few NH fights due to the amount of them that have adds. I also really need to get around to getting a cursor add-on for when I use Meteor or Flamestrike. I keep losing the bloody thing.

We had a couple of wipes on Trillax of all fights, but the others that we had already done before were a one-shot deal. I got melee'd to death by an add on Spellblade, but I was botching the fight anyways, so it was likely a good thing. Maybe they just let me die. Anyways, nothing too significant. In general, it felt easier this time. Likely due to that fact that we're not just learning the fights, have better gear, and just spent an hour wiping on a mythic boss. Again we got 5/10 bosses down, and are working on Star Augur. We had 2 attempts on him this time, and were super close on our second.

Oh, and there was a trash wipe on Heroic. Really need to watch those strat vids for trash.

Next time: We down more bosses! Hopefully 3 or so more.
